Of love and devotion- The story of Lord Krishna

A phrase we’re all familiar with and the deity is famous all over India and across the world, Sri Krishna. Worshipped as the 8th incarnation or “avatar” of Lord Vishnu, he is known as the God of love, tenderness, protection and compassion. He is one of the key characters in Mahabharata, the Bhagavata Puranas, the Brahma Vaivarta Puranas and the Bhagavad Gita. Lord Krishna’s life is present in the form of stories, anecdotes, hymns, poems and narratives and are titled under the, “Krishna-Leela”. He is described in various Hindu mythological, philosophical and theological texts. He has been described as a prankster, god-child, model lover, a divine hero and a supreme being. 

In this article, we shall cover the various stories that discuss in depth about Shri Krishna- starting with the story of his birth to Devaki and Vasudeva to the story of him being a counsellor, friend and teacher to Arjuna in Mahabharata. In between, we’ll cover stories of Lord Krishna’s childhood, his triumphant victory of Kamsa and his love for Radha and other gopis.

Mostly all stories related to Lord Krishna can be found in the Mahābhārata, the Harivamsa, the Bhagavata Purana, and the Vishnu Purana. The scenes from the narrative are set in ancient India, mostly in the present states of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan, Haryana, Delhi, and Gujarat.
